The culture of etiquette accompanies human relations. What is the relationship between the culture of etiquette and the culture of communication?

To answer this question, we must focus on examining the phenomena of “culture” and “etiquette. “Culture” is a general concept that encompasses the values created by humanity: both spiritual and material.

Structurally, culture is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that serves as a subject of study for a wide variety of scientific and humanistic disciplines, such as history, cultural studies, philosophy, heraldry, ethnography, and, of course, sociology. Let us look at sociologists, who are interested in the social nature of culture and its role in the functioning and development of society, where the concept of “Social Culture” is highlighted. This term refers to a system of socially significant knowledge, values, traditions, norms, and rules of behavior through which people organize their activities within society. However, “Social Culture” is not just a collection of ethical and aesthetic virtues or other positive indicators upon which society is formed and developed. Indeed, an individual’s socialization process is based on models that include standards of behavior across different social groups and roles, which are assimilated by the individual over the course of their life in society. Consequently, there can also be negative models that appropriate the concept of “Culture,” which have come to be associated with “mass culture.” In general, social culture determines people’s lifestyle and provides them with reference points for interaction in society. Etiquette has the right to play a key role in guiding society toward the regulation of interpersonal relationships and behavior within the framework of order, harmony, and mutual understanding. By conveying exclusively mutual respect, patience, and other ethical values, it helps avoid conflicts and make a good impression based on a set of interaction rules. Knowing and respecting the rules of etiquette are indicators of the overall cultural level of both the individual and society, demonstrating respect for others through concrete actions encoded into symbols that the brain deciphers as a measure of status. Can we therefore state that the concept of “Social Culture” replaces the concept of “Etiquette”? The answer is obvious. The culture of etiquette has accompanied and continues to accompany human relations, as it establishes respectful and courteous rules of behavior, helping to avoid conflicts and create an atmosphere of mutual understanding. Etiquette encompasses communicative norms, appearance, manners, and behavior in various situations: family communications, personal meetings, professional contacts, business negotiations, political and military gatherings, presence in public places and events, etc., thereby contributing to the strengthening of relationships and bonds, the formation of a positive image, and touching upon all areas of human life. For a more complete understanding, consider the following diagram: A person who enters the field of etiquette culture gradually, sometimes without even realizing it, begins to think according to ethical principles, displays aesthetic taste in society, and naturally follows the rules of etiquette without thinking about their specific implementation. By respecting the rules of etiquette, people create a comfortable territory for communication, and being involved in this process undoubtedly expands the scope of understanding other people, provides the prerequisites for reassessing one’s current personal status, and gives an impulse to personal and professional self-development. Based on what has been previously stated, the following principles of etiquette can then be derived:

By combining the words “Culture” and “Etiquette” into a single whole, we see how etiquette supports and improves human relations, creating a positive communicative atmosphere and, consequently, raising the cultural level of society. For example, it is enough to observe how respecting rules, courtesy, tact, punctuality, and respect for personal space make communication pleasant for both oneself and others. It is worth emphasizing once again that relying on the rules of etiquette effectively resolves conflicts of both a private and professional nature, providing a framework to maintain balance and avoid rudeness in unpleasant situations. Etiquette serves as a bridge that unites people, both in their personal and professional lives. It helps build harmonious relationships and strengthen trust and bonds. Another important factor is that etiquette creates a strong image of a polite and self-confident person. For example, observe the functionality of the rules of etiquette in action and evaluate their effectiveness. If we consider the whole of humanity, cultural heritage expresses cultural universals. This concept was coined by the American sociologist and ethnographer J. Murdock, who identified more than 70 universals, meaning elements common to all cultures: language, religion, mythology, heraldry, age grading, body adornment, courtship, greetings, farewells, funeral rituals, etc. Socially significant cultural elements, transmitted to successive generations, accepted and assimilated, form cultural heritage. A parallel can be drawn between precious metals, gemstones, and elements of cultural heritage; etiquette refines them and transforms them into jewelry that allows a person to shine in society. And so, etiquette accompanies us daily, in every situation, from “greetings” to “farewells.”
